How a private sale hands over the car

Every state is a little different. This is the usual private-party path in the U.S.

  1. Agree on the price in writing. A simple bill of sale with VIN, miles, and “as-is” is enough.
  2. Seller signs the title. Buyer does not take the car until that signature is real.
  3. Buyer insures the car the same day. Most states want proof before plates.
  4. File the title with your state DMV. OwnerLot does not title, register, or escrow cars.
