How a private sale hands over the car
Every state is a little different. This is the usual private-party path in the U.S.
- Agree on the price in writing. A simple bill of sale with VIN, miles, and “as-is” is enough.
- Seller signs the title. Buyer does not take the car until that signature is real.
- Buyer insures the car the same day. Most states want proof before plates.
- File the title with your state DMV. OwnerLot does not title, register, or escrow cars.
